Spell Kingdom is run by [operator name - set SPELLING_OPERATOR] (ABN [ABN - set SPELLING_ABN]). In this policy "we" and "us" mean the operator. You can contact us about privacy at [contact email - set SPELLING_CONTACT_EMAIL].
Learner accounts. An account name (used only to log in), a nickname (the only name other players ever see), a password (stored only as a one-way secure hash, never as plain text), and the class year or years the learner plays at. We collect these to run the account and pick the right words.
Practice history. For each round: the game, the mode (Daily Challenge or Free Practice), the year, the score, when it was played, and for some games extra results such as time or how far the learner got. For each word: the word, whether it was spelled correctly, and when. We use this to power the daily streaks, coins, ranking boards, weak-spot practice (words a learner misses come back more often), the My Words and Word Stats pages, and the weekly summary a parent sees.
Rewards and choices. Coins earned, hats and pets owned or worn, names a learner gives their pets, Royal Quest chapters cleared, and settings such as voice speed.
Parent accounts. A parent or guardian can create a parent account with an account name, a nickname and a password, and link learner accounts to it. A linked parent can see that learner's practice days, accuracy and tricky words, set daily play limits, and switch live races on or off. On the Family plan a parent can also type in a school word list, which is stored with that learner's account and is private to them. We record which plan a parent account has, and the dates of any free trial or subscription.
Technical information. A session cookie keeps a person logged in. Some settings are saved in the browser itself (see "Cookies and browser storage"). The server that hosts the site may keep standard access logs (such as IP address, browser type and pages requested) for security and troubleshooting.
Contact messages. The contact form can only be used by a signed-in parent account (a learner or a signed-out visitor is shown a message asking them to log in as a parent instead). If a parent uses it, we receive the email address, message and topic they type, and the name and account name if they choose to add them. We use these only to reply and to help with the question or problem. Messages are saved on our server and emailed to us, and we delete saved messages after 12 months. Our own copies of the emails may be kept for longer in the mailbox we use.
What we don't collect from learners. Real names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, dates of birth, photos, voice recordings or precise location. Games never use the microphone or camera. (The contact form asks for an email address only so that we can reply, and only a parent account can use it.)
We don't sell, rent or trade information, and we don't use it for advertising.
We use one cookie, a session cookie that keeps a person logged in. It is needed for the site to work and isn't used to track anyone across other sites. We also save a few settings in the browser's local storage: the reading font, voice speed and chosen voice, the sound-effects switch, and the Royal Quest camera view. These stay on the device. The site can be installed like an app, which stores copies of its own pages and images on the device so they load faster. We don't use advertising or analytics cookies. All fonts are served from this site, not from a font provider.
Words and sentences are read aloud using the text-to-speech voices built into the learner's own browser or device, through the browser's standard speech feature. We don't run a voice service and never receive any audio. Depending on the browser and voice chosen, some voices are "online" voices supplied by the browser's maker (for example Google or Microsoft), and the browser may send the word or sentence being read to that company to generate the sound. That is between the device and its maker, and is covered by their privacy policy. Voices marked as local or offline on the device don't do this, and a different voice can be chosen in the sound settings.
Spell Kingdom is made for primary-school children and is meant to be used with a parent, guardian or teacher looking after the account. We ask that children under 16 set up an account with a parent or guardian, and that parents create a parent account so they can see progress, set limits and control their child's data. We collect as little as we can from children (see above) and there are no ads, chat or links to other sites in the games.
Spell Kingdom is run from Australia and is used by families in English-speaking countries around the world. Wherever you live, we collect the same small amount of information described above. If you believe a child has given us personal information without a parent's knowledge, contact us and we'll remove it.
Accounts and practice history are stored on servers in [hosting country or region - set SPELLING_HOSTING]. If the hosting provider's systems are outside Australia, information is stored and processed there.
We keep account information for as long as the account exists. A parent can delete a learner's account at any time from that learner's page on the family page (after entering their password). That deletes the account record (coins, pets, word lists, limits and progress) and detaches the learner's practice history from their name, leaving only anonymous statistics such as how often a word is missed across all learners. A parent can also delete their own parent account, which removes the account and any plan on it and leaves linked learner accounts in place, unlinked. Deleted information can remain in routine backups until those are overwritten. You can also ask us to delete an account by contacting [contact email - set SPELLING_CONTACT_EMAIL].
You can ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you or your child. Parents can download a learner's data (a file with the account details, choices and full practice history, excluding the password) from the learner's page on the family page, and can ask us to correct anything that's wrong, such as a class year. If you have a concern, contact us first at [contact email - set SPELLING_CONTACT_EMAIL] and we'll try to fix it. You can also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au). We aim to handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
Passwords are stored only as one-way hashes, and connections to the site are encrypted (HTTPS). Only people who need it to run the service can reach the data. No system is perfect. If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm, we'll tell the people affected and the Australian Information Commissioner as the law requires.
A free Family trial needs no payment details. Paid plans are not on sale yet. Before they are, this policy will be updated to name the payment provider and explain what payment information is held.
We'll post any changes on this page with a new "last updated" date. If a change is significant we'll also show a notice on the site.
