Every example sentence and category tag in Spell Kingdom is original content, written specifically for this app, and so is our choice of words — none of it is imported from a licensed or paid third-party word-list product, and no such product is used anywhere in this app. The one exception to "our own selection" is described under England's National Curriculum below.
ACARA (the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) publishes the
Australian Curriculum v9.0 English content descriptions free and public for anyone to read.
For each year level, those content descriptions describe the kind of spelling
knowledge students are expected to build — short-vowel words in the early years, through to
less-common vowel patterns, silent letters, prefixes/suffixes, homophones, and word origins
in the later years. They do not include an official word list. The category and tag
structure in this app (cvc, blend-digraph, vowel-pattern,
prefix, suffix, homophone, word-origin, and
so on) is shaped by that general progression, but the specific words and sentences assigned
to each year and category were chosen independently for this app, not drawn from any ACARA
document.
The word bank includes 211 words that appear on the statutory spelling word lists for Years 3 and 4 and for Years 5 and 6 in England's National Curriculum (English programmes of study, Appendix 1: spelling). Those lists are Crown copyright and are reused under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Only the words come from those lists: the sentences, tips and tags are our own, and we have placed each word at the year level we think fits (children in England are about a year further on than our year numbers at the same age, so the year a word appears in here is not always the same as its England year group). This is a selection of words from the lists, not a copy of the document, and this site is not produced or endorsed by the UK Department for Education.
The word bank does not follow the curriculum or standards of any other country. Words are matched to year levels by difficulty for children of about ages 6 to 12.
Words and their sentences are written in British English spelling (the spelling used in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, India and most other places). Learners choose American English or British English when they sign up. For American English the app converts words and sentences when a round is built, using a fixed list of known spelling differences (for example colour to color, centre to center, and organise to organize). We don't offer separate country editions or country-specific curricula. A school word list that a parent types in is never converted.

Words and sentences are read aloud using text-to-speech voices built into the learner's own browser or device (the Web Speech API). We don't generate or receive any audio ourselves. Depending on the browser and voice chosen, some voices are "online" voices from the browser's maker, which may receive the text being read out to produce the sound. Local or offline voices on the device don't. A different voice can be chosen in the sound settings. See the Privacy Policy.
The fonts (Atkinson Hyperlegible, Baloo 2 and Nunito, all open-source under the SIL Open Font License) are served from this site, so loading a page doesn't contact a font provider.
Spell Kingdom doesn't call out to any external API, dictionary service, or data provider to build a round — everything a round needs is read from this app's own word list at request time.
